A Meta Sanctuary: Discussing Viners Who Best Emulate the Concept of Civility, Without Recrimination

Sat Feb 25, 2012 10:37 AM EST
not-news, meta, civilty
By Ian F Walter

Let's have a Meta discussion about individual viners who best emulate the concept of civility on Newsvine. Let us do so without recrimination. No snide comments, no clever jabs, no backdoor nonsense. There's been a lot of ugly lately. Let's aspire to do better.

Please tell us who you admire for their civility, and why.  Sing their praises. All political persuasions are welcome. All newsvine categories are welcome.

There is no agenda here, just curiosity. And a desire to read and ponder something pleasant. For a change. If you see viners listed here, and you disagree with their inclusion, keep your feelings to yourself. Rest assured the author of this article will delete comments he feels are negative--no matter how clever or subtle they might be.

Meta article as meta sanctuary? I like it.

There's this one guy who is always civil. Name is Ian. From what I understand, he has the ability to stick cowboy boots in places colonoscopies dare not go, but chooses to refrain from such behavior on Newsvine. I like that, too.

okay this is meant to be a HAPPY seed..got it..negative or disagreeing comments bad...Been spending way too much time reading the political seeds...they can be nasty, snarky and counter productive and it has affected my posting style. Guess I am not included on the civil list now...oh well "C'est la vie"

Add maddad to the list and the Desert Rattler. I know of several others I would include but I have not seen them commenting on the same seeds I have been on lately. I think I need to hunt them down and re-acquaint myself with them.

Nonsense, American Dreams. You are certainly included on the civil list and you are most welcome here. I was pretty certain you missed the part of my introduction that I quoted above. An honest mistake. No worries, whatsoever.

Ditto that in triplicate...he is the epitome of "a gentle answer turneth away wrath"...or however that goes. Even under extreme provocation, I have seen his friendly approach to civil discourse totally confound people who only know snark, sarcasm and personal attacks...it's amazing to watch.

I try to be civil but I am not afraid to admit it, I do tend to be a pot stir'er at times. Or I should say my evil twin who occasionally break free of the mental duct tape holding her in a dusty corner of my mind, is to blame.

On occasion I think "the pot" need a good stir otherwise the seed gets too poloraized. Playing the devils' advocate from time to time can be educational as well as FUN! People forget there is common middle ground on most topics...even the hot button ones. (Exceptions are made on a case by case basis.)

Nice idea but not reality.

Being to PC only protects stupid people from being chastised and perpetuates their ignorance.

Truth is great and will prevail if left to herself. She is the proper and sufficient antagonist to error, and has nothing to fear from the conflict, unless, by human interposition, disarmed of her natural weapons, free argument and debate; errors ceasing to be dangerous when it is permitted freely to contradict them." --Thomas Jefferson: Bill for Establishing Religious Freedom, 1779

We know the tree by the fruit it bears not its name...How many good Viners have been kick out because they call a duck a duck and a White supremacist a white supremacist… Or a NeoNazi a NeoNazi? The internet provides more anonymity then any white hood on a dark night ever could.

"Truths necessary for our own character must not be suppressed out of tenderness to its calumniators." --Thomas Jefferson to James Madison, 1815. ME 14:291

Ian, this is a lovely idea. As a former 'Viner who got fed up with the incivility and deleted my account -- only to miss the intelligent debate with those are civil and recently rejoin -- this is a helpful way for me to re-build my "to read" list with smart and civil individuals.

Nice idea but not reality.

Being to PC only protects stupid people from being chastised and perpetuates their ignorance.

I don't think "civil" should be confused with "PC" or with witholding one's opinion. If you believe someone is really, really wrong, it's not uncivil, and it's perfectly PC, to say, "I believe you're very wrong, because XYZ."

There are so many, where does one start?

I would say in the political page Citzen Kane is a good voice there.

Plus we can't forget our guides, Rottlady, Viki, Luahal and Red wolf are always a help at keeping things civil.

Physicist-retired

Dowser

Etva

Mrs D

Rat Poison

Kearney Outlaw

are just a few I call friend.

And of course my newest freind Ian F Walter who I am very glad came here to add to the civility.

This is wonderful, Ian. I love it.

I have a big list, but three I've come to admire greatly in recent weeks are Truth Sleuth, merleliz, and RatPoison.

My reasons for admiring each are essentially the same. They are respectful to others, and incredibly intelligent. They look at all sides of an issue and give everyone the benefit of the doubt, and express their opinions without trying to knock anyone to the ground. They may use a little sarcasm or snark here and there, but it's not in a way that demeans anyone. They're thoughtful, and take the time and energy required to make thorough and thoughtful comments.

Each of these three users elevates the level of discourse on Newsvine wherever they go.

Actually, I'd have to include Ian Walter in that group, too, for the same reasons. And also for making a concerted effort to encourage people to respect each other even when they're angry and emotionally invested.

EDIT: Ian, I hope you don't mind that I've clipped this to Metavine and Newsvine Community.

Thanks, viki. As a moderator, I'm like the kid who is supposed to be cleaning his room and keeps finding cool comic books. Sidetracked! Everytime I start checking out another viner's page, I check the counter, see I have another comment here, and I'm saying...aw, man. Seriously? I'm reading here...

Here's five that first came to mind that I'm always comfortable reading anything they write because of their courtesy to others:

Enoch and Hiram.. A couple of the good guys.

jameseg has a strong belief system, but I have never seen him become hateful in any of his comments.

HydeWhyte is another who always treats others with respect.

Neetu M. hasn't been on the vine long, but from what I've read in her messages, she is simply a really nice person. I've never seen any hatefulness or disrespect in any of her comments.

This used to be so easy. You could point to pretty much anyone and say 'that guy."

It's a little tougher now, but some Viners really stand out. Enoch, Dowser, Physicist-retired. Soph, who sadly inherited the title of most trolled Viner, but consistently exhibits grace under pressure. Lauhal, who is funny and sweet under any condition, even when it's alcohol induced. Synthesis, Isabella-37. Storyartist. That guy above me, who's name I really hope has something to do with engines, and isn't just a boneheaded misspelling of bonehead. (If it is, I don't want to know).

I'm sure there are a bunch more...but I'll have to think about it. The people that keep popping into my head are no longer around.

Thanks Dennis, but I really don't belong on that list, but it was nice of you to include me with some of the great people mentioned on this article. You were the first one who came to mind when I read the article.

Since many I would have named have already been mentioned, some who immediately come to mind who haven't been mentioned, but deserve to are bobby3053155, Squidward, IDFeb89, Maria-789794, nearing, Fada, Jack Orion, and Rodney-889389, all good people I've known for awhile. There are many more that deserve mentioning, but I don't want to be a page hog, so I hope someone mentions them too.

Oh, and congrats Soph. I hope you and your future husband enjoy a long life together filled with love and laughter.

If you see viners listed here, and you disagree with their inclusion, keep your feelings to yourself. Rest assured the author of this article will delete comments he feels are negative--no matter how clever or subtle they might be.

jonathan-1917156, you didn't cite which people included above use the back door method of insults, or which ones you put on ignore. I appreciate that. However, except for the humorous part about yourself at the end, you focused on the negative. I said not to do that. So, regretfully, your comment is deleted.

Please feel free to add another comment, point out the civil folks, and why you feel that way.

The temptation is to post a list of twenty or thirty gracious, kind, and wonderful people - which I could easily do. However, I don't think that's really what you're looking for.

The ones who clearly stand above the rest, in my mind, are Enoch, Grisham, Physicist-retired, Carloz, and you.

I didn't post much until recently, but I've been reading and commenting on rare occasions since, probably, early 2008 (different ID), and there are some truly wonderful people here. And some stinkers, true, but lots of good people.

Thanks so much for doing this, Ian. It's so easy to get focused on the acrimony, nastiness, and general unpleasantness that we lose sight of the good stuff.

Maybe I just haven't been exposed to that side of you. What I have seen is an intelligent, even-tempered person who has successfully defused some very volatile situations without sounding condescending or officious. And that's not easy to do.

I'll take your word for it that you lose your temper at times. Big deal. None of us always behaves in accordance with our highest ideals. (Ignore the Irishman in the corner, there. He's just trying to stir something up.)

We each develop an online persona that resembles who we are in real life to a greater or lesser extent. It has, of course, become a truism that you can be anyone you want to be online.

I am a better person because of “Arnold_Clapsaddle.” He responds respectfully, intelligently, and helpfully in situations where my flesh-and-blood self would probably be kind of cranky or dismissive. He is in a sense the better person I aspire to be. (Although Enoch is the gold standard for role models, in my estimation.)

My point, such as it is, is that Newsvine’s “Ian F Walter” is capable of things that his flesh-and-blood analog might find difficult. You have already shown yourself capable of great goodness, and perhaps even moments of actual greatness.

I think I’m going to write an article on this subject – the online persona vs. the flesh-and-blood analog. I might even be able to make it interesting to other people. Many years ago, I was a good writer (honest!), but long years of turgid business reports have had a bad effect. Kind of like an ex-college football player gone to seed. With luck, maybe I can recapture some of that long-ago sparkle.

I’ll be in Kansas City all next week, entombed in conference rooms, no doubt, and then there’s a trip to New Mexico the week after that, so, realistically, the article is not likely to appear before mid-March. I’ll do what I can, and I’ll try to make it worth the wait.

Newsvine’s “Ian F Walter” is capable of things that his flesh-and-blood analog might find difficult.

Not so much, Arnold. What you see is pretty much what you get no matter which realm I'm in. It's to my benefit and detriment, I suppose. But I get your meaning. And it's an interesting question. Perplexing. Worth thinking about.

I could no more be brutal to an innocent person in this forum than in real life. And it might be a little easier to walk away from trouble here, cause...well, it's not really a place is it? But I have a hard time getting away from the feeling that there's always a human on the other side. I'm me and they're somebody. They might be phony, or playing a part, or whatever. So what? It's still us, aint it?

I wish my avatar was better looking, though.

Actually, Dennis, I was thinking about you, along with some other Viners who don't seem to use alter egos.

Most of us have screen names and online personas. I suppose it's remotely possible that Tappy McWidestance and spiffie and Enoch are actual, real-world persons, with those names on their drivers licenses and all, but it doesn't seem likely. You, however, along with Paul William Tenny, Ian F Walter, Mike Snyder, and others, operate without an alter ego. Your experiences will necessarily be different because of that.

There is an integrity which I admire in the people who log in as themselves, with no alter ego. It also worries me, though, for reasons which have recently been made all too obvious.

When I signed on, I came from MSNBC, and I was afraid I'd be snarked, if everyone immediately knew I was a woman. I'm a hydrogeologist, so using a screen name of Dowser just seemed to fit and be more gender neutral.

but pretty much, WYSIWYG. :-)

I'm pretty safe, Arnold. Worry not. I'm armed to the teeth, I have really comforting official friends scattered nearby and across the planet, and I know one of the best computers guys ever. And I'm sorta lucky, too. Which counts. Plus, I have an attack squirrel in the tree outside. He doesn't play nice. So...being me isn't much more of a concern than...well, just being me.

Thanks, bonos rama.

I say Dennis,

I would, too. A master of civility.

for always remaining calm and levelheaded amidst a storm.

Lol. Sure. And why wouldn't he? A lightning rod, by design, absorbs and grounds the charge. The rest of us, however, seem to end up with crackled asses and smoking hairdo's. By the way, Ahab remained calm and levelheaded during a storm. Just sayin'.

Sorry, the satirist in me never sleeps. All kidding aside, Dennis McCann has waded through a lot and he remains, in my opinion, as civil as they come. I love that guy and I deeply respect his civility.

And at the risk of comparing apples and oranges, or cats and dogs, or oil and water, I think it's an appropriate moment to at least offer an honorable mention to none other than Jack Gillis. Of late, at least, he has been extremely instrumental in calming some of those storms. And we needed them calmed.

So, uh...Dennis and Jack. Hats off to both of you. Thanks.

Okay...no napalm or artillery strikes, folks. I am currently hovering over that cute little trashcan icon and I am ready to @!$%#ing pounce. No, I am not kidding.

Many of the finest have been mentioned above so I'll try to add a few of my "other" favorites. I am very partial to Kavika, MightyJ, Fighting For Rights, HydeWhyte, JM California, Cobaltblue, oldtincan, John Galt, Keith DSM, RhondaRebecca, Tony Williams and a slew of others. I think these and many many others are a delight to communicate with on the vine, are continually respectful and have a sense of humor to offset any angst that comes along.

I believe Newsvine is heavily laden with the best teachers and the finest members. We are very fortunate to have this site where we can get together, learn and teach each other.

I will add of course all of the Newsvine monitors and staff. Another good fortune for all.

Thank you Ian, you would be included indeed and I think Kudos are sometimes rare on meta articles and this one is a joy.

Thank you for that lengthy list. I look forward to trudging off to all those columns to check out all those fine folks. I am very pleased to have so many names that I'm unfamiliar with. Ian...

Seriously! I showed up here. Thank you for the kind and real, real slow, welcome. :-)

Word on the street, was that this add the makings of the Social Event of the Week!

Why wouldn't I show up? Civility is a word that I hold in high regard, along with a few other Words of Virtue. Recent differences aside, I suspect that we embrace much of the same qualities in others.

I'm not such a bad guy, once you grow to dislike me.

As one who was raised by the son of a Switzerland native, I feel right at home already. Is that cheese, I smell?

Happy, and honored, to be on board!

There are some extremely fine Viners mentioned in this thread. And what a great idea, Ian!

I'd like to add a few that haven't been mentioned (that I saw anyhow):

-rescue dogs62 - Great lady.

-Piletre - Never seen her say a bad word to anyone.

-Proud Pagan - Awesome debater but very civil about it.

-Big Cat-4416462 - New to the Vine but always civil and always leaves great comments.

-Dare To Hope - Glad I met this one.

-Hiram-1381633 - the guy is deeply religious and yet went head to head with me in a religious debate. How many could do that without any rancor whatsoever? Great guy.

-etva - The picture Goddess.

There are so many. The Vine has lots and lots of very cool, intelligent and kind people. It would be impossible to list them all. Enoch and Dowser are two mentioned above who are practically saint-like. LOL.

Great thread and thanks for putting it together, Ian!

I managed to omit Dowser from my list of five, somehow. I hereby rectify that error, with apologies.

Of course, my list of five now has six. I'll have to figure out what to do about that. For now, just pick any five of the six. You can't go wrong, I promise.

Well, like all of us here, I get irked with people. But, what is, is... Every body bases their beliefs on their own experiences. Sometimes, its hard to understand why they feel the way they do, but usually, there are reasons for it. We just don't know those reasons here on the Vine, because we're dealing with a name-- not a person.

I love you, dear Soph-- you are such a wonderful person, and you work so very hard to provide thoughtful discourse here on the vine. We would definitely be worse off if you weren't around!
